Library Connection at Crossroads Mall
SHKS Architects redesigned the KCLS Crossroads branch to create an efficient and vibrant space at the Crossroads Mall in Bellevue. An automated materials handling unit was incorporated within the library and integrated into the exterior book return. The machine is visible at the library's entry, creating an engaging focal point for both children and adults.

All interior furniture and finishes were upgraded, embracing a whimsical aesthetic.

SHKS worked with the KCLS project manager to design and custom fabricate elements throughout the space, including an acrylic illuminated “cloud” over the cyber lounge area, custom stainless steel guardrails and handrails, and a stainless steel power rail to supply power for laptop users. Public computing areas were creatively overhauled into a cyber lounge and cyber bar that includes seating for laptop use as well as group computer use.
Library Connection at Southcenter Mall
The King County Library System Connection at the Southcenter Mall reflects the Library’s approach to literacy outreach – going where the people are. In collaboration with library staff, SHKS combined retail and library expertise, bringing product merchandising concepts to the library context.
Branding graphics, bright interior finishes, and comfortable contemporary furniture reinforce the retail-library fusion. The project, sponsored by the King County Library Foundation, is welcoming and user-friendly.
Library Connection at Southcenter Mall
The Library opens onto the mall on two sides. From the mall, the space invites entry through light, color and depth. Herman Miller office systems furniture, adapted for computer use, commands the center of the space. The work stations accommodate one to three people.
Books cover the side walls; people and computers share the middle ground, and the librarian has a view of the entire space. The interior design conveys the Library’s identity within the mall. Content choices introduce the library system to the consummate retail environment.

The Library is designed as a refuge: family members sit, read and surf the internet, waiting for shoppers in a relaxed setting. This is not a "fast food library” – visitors are invited to linger and explore the space.

A specific design vocabulary defines the children's area. The Library's commitment to young readers continues at Southcenter – distinctive carpeting and low shelving provide a protected area for children. The circular bookcases help identify their special area.
