SHKS worked with the City of Sedro-Woolley and the Central Skagit Library District to design a new library for the community. The building's form responds to visibility and access from State Street, solar orientation, rain protection and the spatial requirements for library activities inside.
An open floor plan and low shelving allow for increased visibility and access to natural light throughout library.
The 12,000-square-foot facility will combine emerging and traditional library services and programs in a flexible building. Multi-use space for STE(A)M group activities, teens/tweens areas, enhanced Early Learning Through Play, and 50+ Senior Space for lifelong learning will complement expanded collections and quiet reading spaces.
Library activities and spaces will be arranged to take advantage of site access, views in and from the building, natural light and ventilation.
The location of the new library was chosen from among six sites. Evaluation criteria included size, parking, proximity to downtown and schools, transportation options, visibility, environmental impact, partnership potential, cost, and availability.
